3D Touch Probes for CNC Machines

A touch probe is a precision measuring device that uses a mechanical or optical trigger mechanism to detect contact with a surface. On CNC machines, touch probes are used for part probing, tool setting, and in-process inspection, feeding accurate positional data back to the machine control for automated calibration and quality verification.

A 3D touch probe uses a spring-loaded stylus that deflects in any direction (X, Y, or Z) upon contact with a surface. This deflection triggers an electrical signal that the CNC control captures along with the exact machine coordinates at that instant, enabling precise measurement of part features, offsets, and orientation.

Renishaw probes, such as the OMP400 used in high-speed milling applications, typically achieve unidirectional repeatability within 1 micron or better. When integrated into machines with advanced thermal compensation and linear motor drives, overall system accuracy can reach ±1 micron, suitable for ultra-precision mold, die, and aerospace component work.

3D touch probes are typically integrated into CNC milling machines, machining centers, and high-speed mills equipped with a compatible spindle interface and CNC control, such as Fanuc systems. Machines like the Roku-Roku Android II come pre-configured with a Renishaw OMP400 probe for immediate use.

Thermal growth in machine structures can introduce measurement errors of several microns during extended operation. Systems with active heat isolation and multiple thermal sensors continuously monitor and compensate for these shifts, ensuring the touch probe's readings remain accurate throughout long production runs and high-speed machining cycles.

Industries requiring extremely tight tolerances—such as mold and die making, aerospace component manufacturing, and micro machining—rely heavily on 3D touch probe-equipped machines. These probes enable in-machine verification of part geometry, reducing scrap rates and eliminating the need for separate CMM inspection in many workflows.
