Centerless Grinding Machines

Centerless grinding machines are used to grind the outer diameter of cylindrical workpieces without requiring centers or fixtures. Common applications include grinding shafts, pins, bushings, rollers, and tubes. They are widely used in automotive, aerospace, medical device, and precision parts manufacturing where high throughput and consistent roundness are essential.

Centerless grinding is one of the most accurate cylindrical grinding methods available, capable of achieving dimensional tolerances as tight as ±0.0001 inches and surface finishes in the range of 4–16 Ra microinches. Modern CNC centerless grinders with in-process gauging can maintain exceptional repeatability across high-volume production runs with minimal operator intervention.

Cylindrical grinding supports the workpiece between centers or in a chuck, making it ideal for precise positional accuracy. Centerless grinding supports the part on a work rest blade between a grinding wheel and a regulating wheel, enabling faster cycle times, no fixture setup, and continuous through-feed production. Centerless grinding excels in high-volume, repetitive part scenarios.

Centerless grinding is compatible with a wide range of materials including steel, stainless steel, hardened alloys, aluminum, titanium, carbide, and ceramics. The choice of grinding wheel abrasive — such as aluminum oxide, cubic boron nitride (CBN), or diamond — depends on the workpiece material and the required surface finish and tolerance.

There are three primary types: through-feed grinding, where the part passes straight through between the wheels — ideal for cylindrical parts; in-feed (plunge) grinding, used for parts with shoulders, tapers, or complex profiles; and end-feed grinding, used for tapered workpieces. Each method suits different part geometries and production volumes.
